February 16- The Council of Lithuania adopts the Act of Independence of Lithuania, declaring Lithuania's independence from the Russian Empire.

February 24- After 7 centuries of foreign rule, Estonia declares its independence from the Russian Empire. The country is occupied by Germany the next day. Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia also declare their independence from the Russian Empire but as the Transcaucasian Democratic Federative Republic.

March 1- German submarine U 19 sinks HMS Calgarian off Rathlin Island, Northern Ireland.

March 4- A soldier at Camp Fuston, Kansas falls sick with the first confirmed case of the Spanish Flu. The 1918 flu was a category 5 pandemic that started in the United States, appeared in West Africa and France and then spread to nearly every part of the globe. It was caused by an unusually severe and deadly Influenza A virus strain of subtype H1N1. Many of its victims were healthy young adults, in contrast to most influenza outbreaks which predominantly affect juvenile, elderly, or otherwise weakened patients. The Spanish flu pandemic lasted from March 1918 (1 Water- dissipation) throughout 1919 (9 Fire- expansion) and ended in June 1920 (8 Soil- change).

March 21- In WWI, Second Battle of the Somme [river valley] begins.

May 6- German troops take one of the oldest towns in Russia; Rostov, on the shores of Lake Nero.

May 16- The Sedition Act of 1918 forbids Americans to use "disloyal, profane, scurrilous, or abusive language" about the United States government, flag, or armed forces during war.

July 15 - In WWI, Germans attack near the River Marne. The Second Battle of the Marne is the final major German offensive on the Western Front.

July 16- By order of the Bolshevik Party, Emperor Nicholas II of Russia, his immediate family, and retainers were murdered.

August 30- Fanya Kaplan tries to shoot Lenin. Petrograd head of Cheka is assassinated the same day.

October 15- The great spiritual teacher, Sri Sai Baba of Shirdi, attained his Mahasamãdhi, the state of consciously leaving one's body (for good) and the dissolution of one's karma.

October 18- The city of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico is nearly destroyed by an earthquake and a tsunami.

October 25- The Princess Sophia sinks on Vanderbilt Reef near Juneau, Alaska, 353 people die in the greatest maritime disaster in the Pacific Northwest.

October 28- Czechoslovakia declares its independence from Austria-Hungary.

October 30- The Martin Declaration includes Slovakia in the formation of Czecho-Slovak state.

October 30- Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen declares independence from the Ottoman Empire.

November 3- Poland declares independence from Russia.

November 4- Mutiny in the German fleet at Kiel begins the 'German Revolution'. Caused by the Naval Command (in the face of imminent defeat) to deliver one last battle to the British Royal Navy. The Sailor’s Revolt which then ensued in the naval ports of Wilhelmshaven and Kiel spread across the whole country within days and led to the abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm II.

November 11- WWI ends. Germany signs an armistice agreement with the Allies in a railroad car outside of Compiègne in France.

November 16- Hungary declares independence from Austria.

November 18- Latvia declares its independence from Russia.

December 1- Iceland becomes a self-governing kingdom, yet remains in personal union with the king of Denmark.

December 1- Iceland becomes a self-governing kingdom, yet remains in personal union with the king of Denmark who also becomes king of the Kingdom of Iceland.

December 1- Following the March 27 incorporation of Bessarabia and Bucovina, Transylvania unites with Romania.

December 1- The Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (later known as the Kingdom of Yugoslavia) is proclaimed.

January 1 (1919, prior to February 4th)- In Scotland, HMS Iolaire sinks on the rocks: 205 die.

January 15 (1919, prior to February 4th)- 'The Boston Molasses Disaster'. A wave of molasses sweeps through Boston, killing 21 and injuring 150. Many horses and other animals were also killed.

January 16 (1919, prior to February 4th)- The 18th Amendment, authorizing Prohibition (prohibiting alcoholic beverages) goes into effect in the United States.

January 25 (1919, prior to February 4th)- The League of Nations is founded. [see 'October 24' in the 1945 commentary]
