Rice Cultivation

May 5, 2003 Photo Update

In 2003, we had an unusually wet spring. Perhaps, good weather for rice growing, but not necessarily for rice germination. Days were cool and damp. Many nights were downright cold! By early May, we began to see more sunny, warm days, so we moved the germination container out of the house. Many of the seedlings were already lanky enough to transplant into the mini-paddies. That's garlic in the background.

The 2003 paddy group is a little more aesthetic than 2002. The blue wading pool and trash bin bottoms have disappeared. More green pots were purchased and the entire group was moved closer to the garden proper.

These are the first transplants. A second generation of seedlings has been started, outdoors, and will be transplanted after they have germinated.

See what I mean? These competing plants aren't just "weeds". I was going to clear this area for a turnip patch, but they were too much a feast for the eye. Included in the blooms, flowering horseradish, feverfew, with a backdrop of emerald mugwort.
